Bowls and Spoons Courses

The Spoon & Bowl carving courses are a perfect starting point for anyone thinking about taking up green woodworking or spoon carving and for novice spoon carvers wishing to improve. You can choose between the 1 Day Spoon Carving Course or the 2 Day Spoon and Bowl Carving Course. Both courses are hosted within a beautiful woodland workshop.

The spoon carving days are hosted by our special guest tutor Samuel Alexander.

Samuel Alexander has been green woodworking for 8 years. What started with carving the wooden spoon for wellbeing, has grown to carving full time with works being featured in the FT, House and Garden and Country Living – Modern Rustic. He plays with shape, form and ergonomics in a organic and sensitive way, taking inspiration from his Devon roots and natural surroundings. Samuel now lives in London and has been teaching and spreading the craft for 5 years.

Spoon Carving – 1 Day Course:

During the course, Samuel will teach traditional, informative and safe techniques from splitting open a log to refining into your own hand carved wooden spoon! “We will be working mindfully with the axe, spoon knife and straight knife to refine a piece of wood in its purest form to create a lovely outcome and the start of a new passion”.

The course runs for 1 day from 10am to 5pm with a break at 1pm for a wholesome energy boosting lunch.

The cost for the 1 day course is £110, this includes all tuition, materials and lunch.

A full list of available courses can be found below.

Spoon & Bowl Carving – 2 Day Course:

The spoon and bowl-carving course allows you to perfect your woodworking skills over 2 days. On the first day you will be working with Samuel honing your spoon carving skills. Once you feel confident and have produced a nice-looking spoon, you will then graduate onto working with Danny to produce a hand carved wooden bowl. Danny will be teaching you additional carving techniques, which will enable you to create a beautiful wooden bowl. You will be using a mallet and gouge, carving axe, spoon knife, drawknife and other razor sharp edge tools to create beautiful and functional spoons and bowls from hard wood and soft wood.

Expect to go home with all your fingers, at least one, maybe two spoons or bowls and the confidence to carve on your own (please note; this is not a bowl “turning “course).

The course runs for 2 days from 10am to 5pm each day with a break at 1pm for a wholesome energy boosting lunch.

The cost of the 2 day course is £215, this includes all tuition, materials and lunch.

Food:

Vegetarian lunches are provided. We usually have a wholesome soup with good local bread and cheese, home-made pickles and fruit.. Plenty of tea and coffee, cakes and flapjack will keep you energised.

Accommodation:

Camping in the woods is available at no extra cost for people booked onto the 2 day Spoon & Bowl Carving Course. The woods are large and wild and there is plenty of wood for camp fires. Apart from a compost loo there are no amenities. There is space for camper vans too, but not hardstanding and no electric hookups!

There is also a woodland cabin… Be the envy of the spoon making group and book the cabin for your course! There is only one cabin so the first person to book it will have this cosy pad to themselves.

Alternatively you can check out AirBnB for some great local accommodation during your course
